Multi-layered Defense Essential in Guarding Against Ransomware Attacks

In ancient times, castles had layered defenses like stone walls, moats, and sentries to protect against invaders. Just as infiltrators did in the past, ransomware operators use various tactics to breach systems, encrypt data, and demand ransoms, prompting modern organizations to adopt multi-layered defenses against these threats.

While ransomware attacks decreased slightly in 2024, successful breaches commanded significantly higher average payments, emphasizing the need for comprehensive defense mechanisms.

In a survey conducted by eSentire and CyberRisk Alliance’s Business Intelligence Unit, 204 IT/Security leaders, executives, and compliance and security admin professionals shared their organizations’ ransomware strategies, experiences and activities.

Some notable findings from this survey include:

  • Over 80% of organizations anticipate being targeted by a ransomware attack to some extent this year
  • For 41% of respondents, the average recovery time for a ransomware attack is one to three weeks
  • The most significant impacts of ransomware were disruptions to workflows, with financial and reputational losses following closely behind
